Young Catholics from across Cameroon are gathering in Bertoua for National Youth Day 2026, an encounter placing faith, formation and contemporary challenges at the centre of the Church’s youth ministry

Taking place from 21 to 26 July in the Ecclesiastical Province of Bertoua, the national gathering brings together young Catholics from across the country’s five ecclesiastical provinces under the theme, “Take courage! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33)

The event goes beyond a large religious gathering

Through catechesis, Eucharistic celebrations, adoration, confession, cultural activities, sports and manual work, the Church is seeking to connect faith with the realities of young people’s lives

The programme also addresses questions about vocation, entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, culture and social responsibility

Doumé-Abong-Mbang welcomes Kumbo and Bamenda NYD delegations

For a generation facing uncertainty about its future, these questions are increasingly central to pastoral accompaniment

Faith and formation at the centre

The National Youth Days place young people’s questions at the centre of the encounter

One of the proposed reflections asks, “Young person, where are you going at the crossroads of life?”

The question captures a central concern of youth ministry

Young Catholics are growing up in a rapidly changing environment

They need spiritual guidance

They also need the knowledge and discernment to understand the world in which they live

For this reason, the programme combines prayer and sacramental life with reflection on vocation, work, technology, culture and social responsibility

The aim is to help young people connect their faith with the decisions they make and the responsibilities they carry

Young people facing a changing world

The challenges facing young Cameroonians also feature prominently in wider national discussions

Employment, education, entrepreneurship, social media and civic responsibility continue to shape conversations about the country’s youth

The Catholic Church approaches these questions from a pastoral perspective

Its concern is not only how young people can find opportunities

Caravan officially launches NYD 2026 in Bertoua

It is also how they can develop the values, judgment and sense of responsibility needed to use those opportunities for the common good

This explains the place given to entrepreneurship and social responsibility in the National Youth Day programme

The focus is on accompanying young people as they connect their faith with their choices and responsibilities

Artificial intelligence adds new questions

The inclusion of artificial intelligence in the programme reflects the changing environment in which young people learn, communicate and form opinions

Digital technologies offer opportunities for education, creativity and innovation

At the same time, they raise questions about misinformation, manipulation, privacy and human judgment

The pastoral challenge is therefore not simply to accept or reject new technology

Young people need the knowledge to use these tools responsibly

They also need the ethical formation to understand the consequences of their choices

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly present in education, work and communication, youth ministry must address questions that are both practical and moral

How can young Catholics remain rooted in truth, human dignity and responsibility while navigating an increasingly digital society?

From formation to social responsibility

The themes proposed for National Youth Day 2026 point towards a wider understanding of youth ministry

Vocation formation can help young people reflect on their future

Entrepreneurship can connect faith with economic responsibility

Reflection on artificial intelligence can prepare them for a changing technological environment

Attention to culture can help them engage with modernity while remaining connected to their identity

Social responsibility can encourage them to see Christian faith as a commitment to society

However, the challenge extends beyond the gathering in Bertoua

A major event can inspire young people for several days

Lasting pastoral impact requires continued accompaniment in parishes, movements, schools and dioceses

For this reason, the real test will be whether the questions raised during the gathering continue to shape youth ministry after the event

A national gathering with a wider mission

National Youth Day 2026 also highlights the national character of the Catholic Church in Cameroon

The country’s Catholic Church is organised into five ecclesiastical provinces and 26 dioceses

The gathering brings young Catholics from across this national structure to the Ecclesiastical Province of Bertoua

Delegations are hosted in the Archdiocese of Bertoua and the dioceses of Batouri and Doumé-Abong-Mbang before converging in Bertoua for the main celebrations

This arrangement gives the event both a national and local dimension

It creates space for prayer and formation

It also allows young people from different parts of Cameroon to encounter one another and experience the diversity of the country’s Catholic community

The theme, “Take courage! I have overcome the world”, speaks to a generation facing uncertainty

NYD 2026 in Bertoua

It does not deny the difficulties young people encounter

Instead, it places those difficulties within a message of hope

For Cameroon’s Catholic youth, National Youth Day 2026 offers a moment of encounter

The wider pastoral challenge is to turn that encounter into a continuing journey of faith, formation and responsibility

That journey will ultimately be measured beyond the celebrations

It will be measured in the choices young people make, the communities they serve and the way they respond to the challenges of their time
